Viscus Morbus: Prologue
By

In early 2013, a virus known only as Viscus Morbus began to spread. It started out small, just a few people could catch it. It didn't really cause much more than flu like symptoms. However, when a young teen happened to catch it, a gene in his body mutated the virus and caused it to develop many more symptoms.  It also allowed the virus to mutate to affect anyone. Worse yet, it created a gene within the virus that affects the Parietal lobe of the brain, causing it to deconstruct the cellular structure of the body and reconstruct it to the desired form of the person infected. Though many are happy that they get the form they've always dreamed of, the ones infected are usually mistreated due to their differences.

Along with mistreatment, many others are usually driven to depression and eventually suicide because of the fact that their no longer human.  They believe that it's all over and even then, they are the lucky one's. Though rare, the virus has in some cases caused the individual affected to die, their body unable to handle the transformation or their body rejects the new cells soon after the change. In even rarer cases, the Transformation affects the body to such a degree that the person is no longer able to recall memories or identify people.  The brain reverts to feral instincts causing the person to literally "go wild". Despite many speculations that the virus affects everyone, there are a few people who are confirmed to be immune to the virus. Scientists are currently working on a way to cure the virus by using some of the genes that create immunity to eradicate the virus. Some are even working on a cure for the transformation for people who want to be human again. The government is working towards preventing the spread, however they are using tactics like kidnapping to do so.

The Viscus Morbus virus is usually characterized by a mild fever that progresses as the virus works through the body. Spinal fluid leaking from the ear was a common symptom of the Transformation.  It was later discovered that this is caused by twisting of the spine due to the Transformation,.  The spine was usually the first thing to change in 95% of patients tested. Pain all over the body of the patient, pain that is resistant to any painkillers, and a feeling of dehydration no matter how much water is consumed are also part of the Transformation. As it progresses, the victim will experience hallucinations of all sorts, from total shifts in reality perception to a numbing of all senses. Many report that victims will sometimes see the creature that they are to change into. Eventually the body will go completely numb, and soon after the victim will slip into a coma. It is during the coma that the body begins to undergo the transformation. There have been reports of people who do not slip into the coma, but the transformation will still occur. You don't need to be a victim of that scenario to know that it is excruciatingly painful, usually causing the person to pass out anyway or in a few cases die.

It is unknown whether the virus will stop on its own, running out of victims, or if it will continue to attack in later generations.  All that is known is that scientists are working for a cure. Unfortunately, it is entirely unclear when the cure will be available. The repercussions of the virus have created a near collapse of society, riots, crime skyrocketing, banks collapsing, even entire countries have fallen due to the virus creating a split in society. All anyone can hope for is that in the end, things will return to normal.

Cool, I like the idea of "you can die" although it's very frequent
